My Dady became a star in the sky

I arrived in U.S. on October 10, 2022, but my ad passed away on October 28, just two weeks after I got there,

Korean Funeral Process

The pictures below are from my dad's funeral. Please respect our privacy

In Korea, a typical funeral lasts three days, blending traditional and modern practices. Here's a general outline of the process:

Notification and Mourning (부고 및 상복): When someone passes away, the family notifies relatives and friends of the death. The family often wears black mourning clothes, with sons and daughters playing key roles in preparing the ceremony.

Body Preparation (염): The body is washed and dressed in clean clothes, traditionally a white shroud, as a sign of respect. In some cases, professional undertakers may assist with this process.

Wake (빈소): The body is placed in a funeral hall or at home where the wake is held. Family members, friends, and guests visit to offer condolences. There is usually an altar with a portrait of the deceased and offerings, including food and drinks. Guests offer a bow (sometimes twice) and may burn incense.

Funeral Service (발인): On the second or third day, a formal funeral service is held. The service includes prayers, eulogies, and expressions of respect for the deceased. Religious elements may be included, depending on the family’s beliefs (Buddhism, Christianity, etc.).

Procession and Burial/Cremation (장지): After the funeral service, a procession takes place to transport the body to the burial site or crematorium. Traditionally, burial was more common, but cremation has become more popular in recent years. The ashes are either buried in a family plot or placed in a columbarium.

Post-Funeral Rituals (삼우제 및 제사): After the funeral, there are additional rituals to honor the deceased. One such ritual is the 삼우제 (Samujae), held on the third day after the funeral, where the family visits the burial site or the place where the ashes are kept. Families also hold memorial ceremonies (제사, Jesa) on significant anniversaries of the death.
